New legislation to build statues of people of color born in DC

DC Councilman Kenyan McDuffie has introduced a new legislation to build statues of people of color born right in DC. The bill calls for additional statues to be considered honoring people who migrated to DC.

Some notable Washingtonians named in the proposed legislation are:

·        Shaed Sisters: Alice, Helen,Dorothy, Eunice, and Ernestine Shaed -Prominent family of educators

·        Mary P.Burrill – Teacher of English and dramatics at Dunbar and an influential playwright

·        Charles Drew – Accomplished surgeon who invented the method of storing blood

·    Rose Greely – The First woman in Washington to be licensed as an architect
