DC area native Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday night defeated Aslan Karatsev in a thrilling opening match encounter at the 2023 Mubadala Citi DC Open.
Tiafoe, who has had a successful year with numeours wins in Houston and Stuttgart , and an appearance at the Wimbledon, thrilled the home crowd, which included NBA legend Kevin Durant with his shotmaking ability throughout the two-hour, nine-minute duel to advance at the ATP 500 event.
Unbelievable match tonight. It was so tight all the way through, he really made me earn it. I’m just happy to get through. He’s a tough player, he’s made the semis of a Grand Slam and he’s very, very dangerous. Very tough first round. – Tifoe
