The Final Design For 11th Street Bridge Park Has Been Approved

The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) this week  approved the  final site development plans for the 11th Street Bridge Park designed by OMA+OLIN and submitted by the District Department of Transportation, on behalf of Building Bridges Across the River.

According to the NCPC, the new park would span the Anacostia River using existing piers from the old 11th Street Bridge in Southeast Washington, DC., and seeks to be a destination for residents and visitors that reconnects them with the Anacostia River, brings together communities from both shores, and generates jobs and economic activity.

The bridge park will include several programmed spaces and active zones, a 1.2 acres trail and landscape area on the Navy Yard side; a hammock area and picnic garden; central plaza; café; community porch;children’s play area; environmental education center, and two overlooks (Capitol Overlook on the north end andAnacostia Overlook on the south end). The park’s south side will have an amphitheater and a kayak and canoe launch adjacent to the existing Anacostia Riverwalk Trail.

This is such an exciting project for the District. I commend everyone involved and especially Building Bridges Across the River for their passion and persistence in seeing this project through. I think the park design is very innovative and it is a public space that will better connect the communities on both sides of the Anacostia River. I am certain that this will be a space for everyone to enjoy and come together. – NCPC Chair Beth White
